Chinstrap Colony and Snow Storm

Chinstrap Penguins
(Pygoscelis antarctica)

This image gives a very good feeling of how harsh conditions can be in Antarctica. It is early January, the height of summer, and still the Chinstrap Penguins in this colony are enduring a huge snow storm, with very strong winds, temperatures below freezing, and no visibility. To take this picture, I had to poke my head over the rocky ridge, secure myself with one hand, and take the picture with the other. This had to be done very quickly as the lens became full of snow flakes in a second. I was wearing six layers of thermal clothes, and still was shivering. I still cannot imagine how cold it will be during winter…

Una muestra de lo duras que pueden ser las condiciones en la Antártida. Aun en pleno verano (Enero) se pueden desatar violentas tormentas de nieve con temperaturas bajo cero, gélidos vientos y nula visibilidad. Cuando tomé esta foto, en una colonia de Pingüinos Barbijos, llevaba seis capas de ropa térmica e impermeable y aún estaba temblando. No quiero ni pensar como serán las condiciones en invierno...
