Hawksbill Turtle
Hawksbill Turtles: gentle giants who inhabit coral reefs. Heavy and slow on land, they are extremely graceful underwater, effortlessly ¨flying¨over the reef.
Despite their prolonged lifespans (some can live more than 100 years), a slow reproductive cycle and increasing pressure from overfishing and the illegal trade in tortoiseshell products have forced their inclusion in the Critically Endangered UICN list. It is estimated that less than 8,000 breeding females exist in the world.
